About the Hike
The Road from Austin to Boston
Overview

Determining the precise path we'll take has been problematic and logistically complex in part because we're avoiding Interstates, State Highways (if at all possible), and long spanning bridges.  The risks are just to great.

That pretty much restricts us to farm roads, back roads, country roads, and perhaps even dirt roads.  While we'll have GPS technology, that won't tell us if the route we're taking is flooded, under construction, or otherwise impassable.

As a result, I have been reticent to start charting our course for public consumption.  However, we've received many inquiries from supporters who have generously offered us accomodations so I wanted to let everyone know where we're at in the process.

The first and most significant decision I had to make was whether we should cross the Appalachians and if so, where?  If we chose not to, we'd have to traverse the Gulf Coast states leaving us exposed to the heat, humidity, and the onset of the hurricane season.  There are other marshland hazards, too, like water hemlock, the deadliest vegetation in the U.S., which we want to stay as far away from as possible.
